Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause viral illness, sometimes leading to lethal complications. The disease flourishes in the urban affluent neighborhoods, poor areas, suburbs, and the countryside. Each year, an estimated 50 to 528 million people are infected with Dengue, out of which 10,000 to 20,000 people are estimated to die.

Though there are vaccines and preventive measures against the deadly disease, countries end up spending a lot on such prevention if they cannot predict the time and area of Dengue occurrence. Artificial Intelligence has proved to be effective by predicting the outbreaks of the disease within a 400-meter radius.

The system, called AIME (Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology)searches through 90 databases and 276 variables that influence its spread. The team tested the system in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brazil by comparing AIME results with the actual situation in these countries. It matched the reality with 81-84% accuracy. Although AIME is relatively new, the results are promising.

Artificial Intelligence is helping better the healthcare and biomedical sector by diagnosing diseases in a second. This is interesting as the process requires little or no human intervention. This helps medical practitioners focus on the prognosis rather than worry about the diagnosis, thus improving the efficiency of the treatment. Hence, the healthcare sector is proving to be a big-time beneficiary of Artificial Intelligence. Situations like monitoring one’s health using fitness bands, facilitating access to medical data, and even conducting robotic surgeries have been made well run with the advent of AI.
